module 3: Critics Talk Film Criticism

There is no one single way to review, critique or evaluate films, but here are some tips from those (past and present) who offer tips, thoughts and ideas on how to get engaged in understanding film on a deeper level.

Christopher Stuckmann is an American film critic, filmmaker and YouTuber. As of December 2020, Stuckmann has over 1.8 million subscribers and over 590 million views on YouTube. On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, he is an approved critic and a member of the Critics Choice Association.

Legendary Film Critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert gave advice to students who are writing their first film review. This contains good advice appropriate for critique of literature and other art forms.Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert offered movie reviews and criticism for decades, as well as other film-related features. Each film was given a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” by each, indicating whether it is a good or bad movie. They sometimes profiled actors and directors and a long-running TV series.

Manon de Reeper is a Dutch screenwriter and entrepreneur of Afro-European descent. She has academic degrees in Clinical Psychology and Global Criminology and is the founder and CEO of online film magazine Film Inquiry.

Today, on Meet me at the Movies (episode 413) Jason Black shares his love of film with Noel T. Manning II. Black is a leader within the Oklahoma Film Critics and a member of the Critics Choice Association. You can find his work on KJYO-FM and in Distinctly Oklahoma Magazine with the column “Pass the Popcorn.”

The first 15-minutes will explore is entry into the film criticism world. The last half of the show will look at film criticism during the pandemic of 2020.
