Creating Your Video and Audio Channel
We talked earlier in the semester about how to address TV and Youtube audiences. But in regards to building a portfolio –Youtube is a great way to do this. It truly takes only five steps: 1. Create a user account
2. Create a movie review page (with YouTube tools)
3. See a movie
4. Write a review
5. Upload a video review.
Film Critic Chris Stuckmann reviews the Hellboy adaptation:
This same concept can be done with a podcast (an audio review). Most desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones have options for recording audio. So use the same concepts we’ve already covered as it relates to freeform or structured reviews and find an audio hosting site like soundcloud.com to store your reviews. Many sites offer free options as well.
Here is an example of a Soundcloud (freeform) review with film critic Jay Forry.
How to Write a Review for Twitter : Scale it down to the very basics –you have a 280 characters (letters and spaces) to share film name, your thoughts, and grade (or opinion) –it is more difficult than it sounds. It takes practice and editing.
If you plan to use longer reviews via Twitter I’d suggest using the Twitter “Moments Option” allowing the user to string together a series of Tweets into a narrative (almost blog-like). Click on the “create new moment” application here: https://twitter.com/i/moments.
Another option for your Twitter reviews is to tease your audience with a Tweet and share a link to your full review (newspaper, magazine, blog, video, etc),
Examples of standard Tweets (less than 280 characters) :
“Given the talent involved & the potential for drama in John Callahan’s story, it’s one of the year’s most frustrating films. Gus Van Sant’s DON’T WORRY, HE WON’T GET FAR ON FOOT stars Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Jonah Hill & has only 1 thing going for it – creative style = C-”
“Damien Chazelle’s biopic on astronaut Neil Armstrong & the US Space Race, fails to get off the ground. While it is visually pleasing, & has Oscar-worthy sound design, the story pacing & sluggish acting from Ryan Gosling +2 hr 22 minute runtime makes #firstman disaster.”
“The Best of Enemies” (STX) is an appealing fact-based drama that promotes humane values and Gospel-guided behavior.”
“Kicking the dark and overwrought DC Extended Universe to one side, Shazam! makes for fun, engaging and family friendly wish fulfillment. Review here: https://bit.ly/2VpqV9W #ShazamMovie #Shazam”
“Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor’s “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” makes a strong impression for a directorial debut.”
“#Glassmovie = split decision” = too much of a good thing + too little of what was needed = mixed bag.”
#KeanuReeves is chaos in action in political-infused-action-story of drugs, guns & revenge. #johnwick3 brings gr8 wrap to the trilogy. A-rated”
“If you want excellent and original comedy – then run away from #Little = Worst attempt at humor this year.”
