Dialogue and Response Assignment (Due March 22)

Research target

For the next week you should devote all of your time in this course conducting and organizing research for your semester project. You will have two focused assignments. NOTE: These assignments cannot wait until the last minute; it will take dedicated time and effort to complete these by the deadline:

Assignment 1  – Engaged Rose Library Assignment with dialogue/response post (Due March 22):

You should reach out to a staff member at the Rose Library (library@clevelandcc.edu , 704.669.4024, library.clevelandcc.edu) and ask for a tutorial and/or guidance on the use of online and physical resources and references. The Rose Library is located in the Jack Hunt Campus Center (1st Floor). You especially need to know how to access scholarly & peer reviewed materials, journal articles, magazine articles and trade publication articles. You should also ask for guidance on search tips (this will help you on your semester project research). The Rose Library will also offer guidance and/or tutorials on the use of writing a research paper in APA style format. This is the format I will require for the semester project (and this week’s writing assignment):

  • Times New Roman fonts should be used (although I will accept the alternate Georgia font).
  • Each line should be double spaced with one inch margins.
  • A running header with your name and paper title on the left.
  • Page numbers should be on the right.
  • Reference list entries must have a hanging indent.

Databases

In this week’s response post/dialogue section you need to address the following (and post your responses on this response page, or email them to me):

  1. Name of the staff member(s) who assisted you and the date and time you visited the Rose Library (in person, by phone or online).
  2. What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?
  3. How do you feel this will better assist and prepare you for this week’s written assignment or your semester project (and/or future research assignments)? Or, has it already? Offer an example.

    Mr. Manning,
I have sent the Rose Libary Staff an email asking for the resources that you suggested we should ask for. I blind carboned copied you in the email so you would receive it as well, as proof that I did my assignment. Does that count as me doing that assignment?

    Thank you,
    Dylan Mistretta.

The staff member that helped me was Jerrianne Queen. She was my librarian when I was in elementary school.

      2. What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?

The most valuable thing that I learned was how to access the database. With this tool, I can read accurate information and not worry about fake information as much.

      3. How do you feel this will better assist and prepare you for this week’s written assignment or your semester project (and/or future research assignments)? Or, has it already? Offer an example.

With the information that I received, I will now know how to use the format APA correctly. This will help me with my semester film project.

I was assisted by two staff members, Leslie S. Queen and Connie Staton. I visited the Rose Library at 4:45 pm.
What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?
The most valuable information I received was how to easily find specific film and reading material via the Rose Library, and also how to save and cite my sources on the Rose Library database.

I feel this information will better assist me and prepare me for my semester project by giving a variety of sources that are easily in my grasp, and very simple to cite. The information I gathered on APA will assist me my giving me a better understanding on how to properly write a document in APA format. For example with careful advice and filtering I can easily find journal articles to read and find information on my semester project film. -Caitlyn Hamrick

The staff member that assisted me was Emily. Friday March 15th In HUM110 she came and reviewed with us how to use the database and navigate the website when it comes to research and looking at a topic.
2)What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?
The most valuable information that I received from her would be that there is multiple websites and centers that you can go to to get more than one point of view on a subject. I also found it valuable that she showed me how to use the citation button and also where to find and navigate the tools in general.
3)How do you feel this will better assist and prepare you for this week’s written assignment or your semester project (and/or future research assignments)? Or, has it already? Offer an example.
I think this will better assist me for one with my citations because I have no Idea how to do that in APA format. Overall I think it would help because it is a source that I can get easy access to and can help me with because they are easier to understand for the most part and all the tools that come with it that can allow me to actually engage with the article. It will help me get a better understanding of my movie and also how other reviewed it. In my semester project it will help me not be biased and rely on what I have learned from my research and what observed while watching the movie without being biased about it or it all being facts from just a few sources. It will add diversity to the outcome of the semester project.

What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?

The most useful information I received was how to navigate the database to find the topic you are looking for.

How do you feel this will better assist and prepare you for this week’s written assignment or your semester project (and/or future research assignments)? Or, has it already? Offer an example.

I feel like this will help me with my semester project by allowing me to do research on the film and find many peoples views of it and many facts about the film which will help me with researching this film. I also now know how to use APA format and that will help me with my semester project.

The staff member that assisted us from the Rose library is Emily in which she came to our classroom in HUM-110 and we also visited the library in a way to learn about the resources that the library has to offer.

What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?
The most valuable information that I learned was of the student database in which the online library provided different sources from students and critics in general of a certain subject in order to gain more knowledge of the different perspectives concerning the subject. Emily taught us how to research for books in the student library and how to use the online library and to use a website for citing an article easily.

How do you feel this will better assist and prepare you for this week’s written assignment or your semester project (and/or future research assignments)? Or, has it already? Offer an example.

I feel that this is going to help me because if I find myself stuck on what to write, I can easily find resources on the topic I am examining and find more information or learn new information about the assignment that I had not captured before. This is also going to help me to be able to cite more efficiently in which will help me for future research papers so I don’t get counted against for plagiarism.

The name of the staff member who came to help me was Emily. This happened on Friday March the 15th. She came to me while I was in my Technology and Society class (2019SP-HUM-110-940WB). She discussed with the class how to work our way through the website and access the database to use it to do research on our assignments.

What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?
Some of the most valuable things that I learned from her was that there is more that one source of information so I can get lots of information from different sources.
How do you feel this will better assist and prepare you for this week’s written assignment or your semester project (and/or future research assignments)? Or, has it already? Offer an example.
It will help me because I have access to it everytime I log into blackboard. It can also help me to understand my semester project better. So I can get it done in a timely manner and do it the best way that I can. Also pulling from more than one source will add to my project in a positive way.

I emailed the Rose Library and got a response from Jerrianne B. Queen, she assisted me on March 20 at 10:32 AM.
What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?
Jerrianne sent me links to the Rose Library website, what I found after watching a video and that was the most valuable information was this research website called Summon, you can have free access to resources that you can’t find on Google. Also it gives you access to half a billion articles, videos, E-books, etc.
How do you feel this will better assist and prepare you for this week’s written assignment or your semester project (and/or future research assignments)? Or, has it already? Offer an example.
This will better assist me because I will be able to get more and probably even better information from all different information. I always have trouble looking for resources because if I search something up on Google, it gives me results that are not relevant to the research that I am doing. Also Summon gives you free online access to different things but on Google you can find websites that make you join and pay just to get your valuable information. Summon will help me on future assignments with finding my resources and helping me get my answers to specific questions.

My response will not show up on the blog page so I am emailing the response to you

The person who helped me was Leslie Queen she had sent an email a while
back that gave me a link to a video(https://app.vidgrid.com/view/d1pDRn1YdonE/?sr=dzmD1c).
This video gave me a large amount of information on how to use the database in the Jim and Patsy Rose Library online. So while the video was going on I decided to follow it and the it was Tuesday, March 19; and the time was ten thirty AM.

    An
important thing I learned from watching the video and exploring was that you can filter your search very specifically and you can also search based on titles and subjects. I could also do an advanced search that helped me find what I needed, including how
    to format my things correctly.

This will definitely help me in my semester project because I will be able
to find what I need easily and without wasting time that could be spent working on the review part of the project rather than the research part.

The name of the staff member who assisted me is Emily Von Pfahl. She visited my HUM 110 class on Friday, March 15, 2019 at nine am. She came to my class because she wanted to review and teach my class how to use databases and how to navigate our way through websites when researching and looking for a specific topic.

What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?

The most valuable information I received from Emily was how I can use multiple websites and centers to get more than just one point of view on a specific topic. I also learned how to use the multiple resources for research rather than just one source.

I feel using the databases will better assist and prepare me this week’s written assignment, semester project and my future research assignments by helping me with doing better research and using more than just one source. This is because if I use more than one source and use multiple resources it will allow me to have more information put into my projects and research assignments. An example of this would be using the databases to research more information on The Wizard Of Oz for my semester project.

The staff member that has helped me was named Emily Von Pfahl. This librarian had visited my Technology in Society class, HUM 110, on Friday, March 15 during the time of approximately 2:30 pm to 3:45 pm. Also, three weeks prior, I had visited the Jim and Patsy Rose Library during January 22, from approximately 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm. During the visit of March 15, Emily had tasked us with researching a term via online databases provided by the online counterpart of the library. During the visit to the library of January 22, I had learned to research by using tangible resources.

    2. What was the most valuable information you received from the staff member or from exploring the research tools?

The most valuable thing that I have learned from these activities is how to use the Jim and Patsy Rose Library to research a wide variety of topics, be it either in-person tangible resources or online databases.

    3. How do you feel this will better assist and prepare you for this week’s written assignment or your semester project (and/or future research assignments)? Or, has it already? Offer an example.

I feel that this will better assist and prepare myself for this week’s written assignment or my semester project because this will allow me to find more information about resources and the topic(s) that may be presented with my semester project. For future research assignments, this knowledge will better my ability to do this project by allowing me to perform better research. For example, in this week’s written assignment, the three new sources that I must provide that have come from the library will be easily accessible because of my ability to traverse the resources provided by the library.
