Creating Your Film Review Blog (and your 1st assignment) – Due Tuesday, Aug. 28 – 11:59 am

**Post a link to your blog in the comments section at the end of this post**

All of your reviews, evaluations, or essays for this class will need to be loaded onto your personal Blog. This blog will become your portfolio of work that could ultimately be used to gain you employment in film criticism as well.

  • Create a simple blog using WordPress.com or your favorite blogging platform.wordpress-f9b395b5491efc60ec0226b62b948650c9af728b2584566a15bedacf2be53bd1
  • Create a name for your blogsite that would reflect a Movie/Film review site (examples – Make Mine a Movie, Real to Reel, Moving Images, Reely Smart Reviews, Popcorn Feminist, Movie Madness, Cine-View, Rated G for Guberman, etc.). Find something creative, fun, unique that fits you while also letting your audience know it is a film review site.
  • Your first blog post should be focused on you and your movie history/bio. Please name the entry –“What Film Means to Me” (minimum of 400-600 words). You should offer some background about: who you are, and some of your favorite & least favorite film genres, films and filmmakers (you can select actors, actresses, directors, composers, effects artists … your choice). You want your reader to get a great snapshot of how you view and perceive filmmaking. You can choose any writing style for this assignment.

Your “What Film Means to Me”  blog post should also contain:

Avatar

  • A photo or an avatar representing you.
  • At least (3) Three additional photos (either of films or filmmakers mentioned  in your post, or something visually representing your “What Film Means to Me”” post).
  • At least (3) three hyperlinks.
  • At least (3) three keyword tags for searching purposes (ideas: your name, your blog name, your film names, hometown, etc.).
  • Date and your name at the end of the post.
  • Optional: A multimedia embedded file (video or audio).
  • Enable comments for your posts.

Celia, I really appreciate your cultural impact and input; your perspective will be one of benefit to our class. I’m really interested to learn more about the Málaga film fest. I also appreciate history of Spanish cinema video -I may want to repurpose that for our international class later this semester. Thanks again -Noel T. Manning II

Thanks Zane – a student os Siskel & Ebert … now that’s something to get excited about. Continue to explore other well-known (and lesser-known) critics and their approach to evaluation & criticism, I think you’ll be fascinated by all the many “voices and styles” of film review out there. We can learn from each of those, just as we’ll do from our fellow film critics in this class. – Noel T Manning II

Thanks Thomas – There is absolutely nothing wrong about knowing “way too many useless facts about Star Wars, Marvel, and DC.” 🙂

Sam – You have a wide variety of film tastes going back to your childhood (and even films preceding your parent’s birth) – I’m interested to see if you can find “new” films to love.

Jalissa, I’d really love to have you share more about films you watched growing up & what those earliest “film-watching” memories were.

Drew -I encourage you to revisit the Nolan catalogue, you may find that you’ll add to your list of “three.”

Kelsea – I’m looking forward to your thoughts on the technical aspects of filmmaking (it looks like that is something of interest to you). Some films, Like “Interstellar” really do engage our critical thinking, and I love to get into films like that as well, at times. Moral Lessons, love stories & happy endings … It looks like these all speak to you? I bet you’d love a RomCom starring Zooey Daeshanel with Ryan Gosling? – Noel T. Manning

Luke – Your overview of family impact on film viewing (and influences) is the perfect overview of “baggage” we bring with us into likes. My grandfather introduced my to War films and westerns when I was a kid, and I always loved watching those with him every time I visited. He was a WWII veteran and fought on the shores of Normandy, so Band of Brothers & Saving Private Ryan both connected to me (and connected me to his history).

By the way, Did you memorize the Tarzan soundtrack? Noel Manning
